Jewish Life in Today's Diverse Family

The traditional Jewish family has been transformed by a new social reality. The composition of family is rapidly changing through increased cross-cultural and interfaith marriages, single parenting by choice, and same sex families. This session will examine the "cohabitation" of our Jewish identity, tradition, and culture in these diverse family compositions. We will discuss the creation of new Jewish rituals and celebrations, social action and other values as a strategy for the cohabitation of Jewishness. This is a great opportunity to learn, share, and strengthen our understanding of complex family dynamics, and encourage a dialogue about creating supportive and cohesive families .

Finding God Even in Temper Tantrums: Parenting as a Spiritual Practice
Being a new parent is exhausting, crazy-making, and changes every aspect of your life. At the same time, Jews have an image of "G-d the Father" (Avinu in Hebrew) often invoked during the High Holidays. But it's hard to think about G-d during a level five temper tantrum in the middle of the supermarket. In this session, we'll watch and discuss Danya Ruttenberg's ELI talk, "Parenting as a Spiritual Practice," and think together about how parents can find radical amazement, prayer, and even a sense of the divine while raising their children. This session is geared towards families with young children, but children and parents of all ages are welcome!

Peoplehood and Purpose: Beyond Continuity
The construction of Jewish selfhood is a hot topic in the aftermath of the Pew Study. Despite considerable efforts by the organized Jewish community, it turns out that “making Jews” is a particularly difficult task in the modern context. What does it mean to be a 'people' if we are not defined by race or ethnicity and we cannot agree on ideology, praxis, or faith? Might there be shared purposes that ground Jewish identity? If so, what are they, and if not, what is the glue that holds “us” together?
