How Do Jews Justify Suffering? Rabbinic Thoughts on Physical Affliction

There are several stories in the Talmud where the rabbis praise, extol, and even request physical pain in order to prevent some sort of greater punishment. Is this a Jewish attitude?!? We will analyze these stories and try to determine whether we can relate to this rabbinic perspective on physical punishment. Back by popular demand from last year's Limmud, Yaffa leads us in a fascinating text-study session, open to all levels of experience or lack of experience with Jewish texts.

Rabba Yaffa Epstein serves as the Director of Education, North America for the Pardes Institute of Jewish Studies.
