The construction of Jewish selfhood is a hot topic in the aftermath of the Pew Study. Despite considerable efforts by the organized Jewish community, it turns out that “making Jews” is a particularly difficult task in the modern context. What does it mean to be a 'people' if we are not defined by race or ethnicity and we cannot agree on ideology, praxis, or faith? Might there be shared purposes that ground Jewish identity? If so, what are they, and if not, what is the glue that holds “us” together?
