Abraham Benyunes grew up at New York’s Spanish and Portuguese Synagogue, where he received an extensive and superb education in Sephardic history, culture, and prayer. He had very little opportunity to go to any other synagogue until he entered Medical School in Washington D.C. At the time, the only synagogue in walking distance was a large Conservative Ashkenazi Synagogue. It was a major adjustment for him, but fascinating to see the contrast and content of the worship service. The Rabbi took him under his wing and encouraged him to tell his “Sephardic story” to the congregation which he did in several different venues.
